Watch the first season before you read the book that way you can see how much they stay on track. I read the books a few years ago and so far with season 2 they are maintaining the overall story line but adding in their own bits and pieces. :)
When bath time comes around at our house, George and Gracie act like it's the worst think in the world...but when we're all done - they feel great! Go figure.
